Customer Reviews Another man’s perspective: Do I get off this easy? I recently ordered this book for my wife’s birthday as a way of opening up one more avenue of communication and understanding in our marriage. After reading it myself first, I increasingly felt very hesitant to give it to my wife. Why? Although the book certainly raises important issues that are a great conversational starting point, I can’t help but feel that Feldhahn’s book is saturated with a particular kind of “submissive wife” ideology common in various evangelical Protestant circles. One of Feldhahn’s driving theses is that men are wired a certain way, so the key to a successful marriage is for women to discover the intricacies of that wiring and then adapt themselves accordingly (Feldhahn tells her women readers that these “fascinating new secrets” about men are “supposed to change and improve us [women]” [p.19-20]). Although that might be in fact what men want, I’m unconvinced that is always what we or our marriages need. Following the suggestions in this book might make a happier husband but a more unfulfilled, subservient wife. That’s not to say I can’t relate to much of what she describes. Her analysis of the inner wiring of men is interesting and accurate for the most part (although certainly some aspects are probably overstated), but it’s her prescriptive “solutions” that seem misguided. In my experience, a marriage works best when good communication leads to mutual compromises. To have wives coddle their husbands might produce the desired results in the short term, but I think it is worth thinking about the reciprocal nature of a good marriage for long-term success. Is it too much to ask that husbands should work just as hard to figure out the needs and desires of their wives and adapt themselves as well? I hope not. Unless this is a two-side process, the long term benefits are questionable at best. But again, she does manage to capture many of the core struggles of the average man. No one man (hopefully) embodies all the fears, anxieties, and problems she describes, but it would be a rare man that could identify with none of them. I still plan on giving the book to my wife (with a host of qualifications) because it does in some ways describe my own inner fears, desires, and struggles, but my hesitancy to do so still remains simply because of the implicit message to women.

Reasons Why You Will LOVE Discovery Girls, August 19, 2003 A Kid’s Review This review is from: Discovery Girls – a Magazine for Girls Ages 8 & Up (Magazine) 1. They come to your state and may choose you to be in the magazine, which is VERY exciting! 2. It talks just enough about boys and crushes to keep you satisfied and clued in, and it doesn’t go overboard trying to keep guys in or out of the magazine. 3. The beauty section talks about natural things, like hair care and acne, as oppose to “shaping your eyebrows” and “getting a fake tan.” 4. The fashion section advertises cute clothes and accessories that are affordable and that you’ll actually wear. Some other magazines were advertising how these ugly bright tights are going to be “hot” this year (and at pretty expensive stores,may I add). 5. Tons of quizzes! And not quizzes like, “Do You Know How to Get Your Guy?”, but, “Are You Pop Star Material?” and, “Will You Survive Camp?” 6. Lots of cool contests, like describing your ultimate birthday party! 7. The girls they have in the magazines are girls that you really can relate to and don’t look they’ve been on an extreme crash diet for two years. Also, they aren’t wearing clothes with plunging necklines, super-short minis, leather jackets, and sequined bras. 8. The magazine has debates on subjects like, “Are school uniforms a good idea?” And they publish both sides of the argument! I hope you love Discovery Girls as much as I have!

5.0 out of 5 stars “Grab a Box of Tissues Before you Watch!, November 24, 2010″ Before you sit down to watch “Letters to God,” I strongly suggest grabbing a whole box of tissue to bring with you. By the end of this movie, you are definitely going to need it. Tyler Doherty is an 8 year old who is battling cancer. His way of praying is to write letters to God. He has one for the mail carrier almost very day. Brady, a man whose life has fallen apart and who seeks solace in alcohol, is a new mail carrier who takes over the route. On his first day, Tyler pukes on his shoes. Nevertheless, he and Tyler soon become friends. He still isn’t sure what to do with all of his letters to God, however. In time, both his friendship with Tyler and his family, and the letters himself will change his life. The idea of writing letters to God takes off and by the end of the movie, many people have joined Tyler in praying in this matter. This movie just may inspire you to write one or more of your own to God. This is truly an amazing, heartbreaking story about faith and trusting in God even when all seems hopeless. It is rated PG and is appropriate for ages 7 and up (due to subject matter). As an added plus, Ralph Waite (the father from “The Waltons”) does a remarkable job as the grandfather of Tyler’s best friend Sam.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Uplifting, December 29, 2010″ This CD is full of my favorite contemporary praise songs. I especially love to play it when I’m doing house work. Makes the time go by quicker and is very enjoyable and uplifting.

Abigail is the second novel Jill Eileen Smith wrote about some of the wives of David. I loved the first novel, Michel, and wondered if the author could write as compelling a story about Abigail. She has exceeded my expectations. Abigail is a woman who wants to serve God but has been frustrated by what life has thrown her. She is married to an abusive man and can see no way out. But when her husband suddenly dies, she’s approached by David, the man Samuel anointed as king. She follows her heart and marry David. But life doesn’t get any easier when you’re on the run with a future king. But it’s even worse to share the man you love with other women. Any woman who wants to honor God but has been frustrated with the men in her life or who has been thrown some curves will relate to this wonderful story. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to read Jill Eileen Smith’s next novel about the life of Bathsheeba.
